Hacinebi Excavations

In six seasons of excavation (1992-97) at Hacinebi, 18 trenches were excavated, exposing an area of ca. 1400 m2, and reaching bedrock in in three different parts of the site (areas A, B, and C). This work has identified five main occupations (see site chronology):

(1) Phase A - ca. 4100-3800 BC - characterized by early forms of the Local Late Chalcolithic ceramics, with no Mesopotamian material at the site.

(2) Phase B1 - ca. 3800-3700 BC - characterized by late forms of the Local Late Chalcolithic ceramics, with the appearance of Uruk Mesopotamian bevel rim bowls in the uppermost layers.

(3) Phase B2 - ca. 3700-3300 BC - characterized by late forms of the Local Late Chalcolithic ceramics, and the rapid appearance of the full range of Late Middle Uruk material culture.

(4) Early Bronze I - ca. 3000-2800 BC

(5) Achaemenid/Hellenistic - 5th-2nd centuries BC
