Heckler's Veto

Case Type:

Actual.

Exigence:

In March, 1999, former Christian Coalition head Ralph Reed came to speak on campus. Student groups lead by BGALA (Bisxual, Gay and Lesbian Alliance) protested, including by holding a "kiss-in" during Reed's speech.

Audience:

You, members of the Northwestern Community.

Possible
Constraints:

Northwestern's student paper, the Daily reported on the talk in articles before and after.

At Columbia University in 1998, student protest managed to shut down another conservative event. Nat Hentoff wrote an op-ed against such a "heckler's veto," Molly Klein replied, and Hentoff replied in turn.

Northwestern's Statement on Student Rights and Responsibilities may bear on this subject. A University administrator sent this email to student group leaders, advising them on the acceptable limits of protest here at Northwestern.

Decision:

Up to you.
