Fortunately, I think I've found a possible and likely cause of the letters you've forwarded to me. However, it is disturbing. If I do an 'excite' serch on jeangoodwin@nwu.edu, from a WebTV box, pages and pages of URLs relating to the Speech Dept. at Northwestern turn up, since your username is at the bottom of practically every page. However, I couldn't figure out what, in those pages, could be thought to 'solicit' a response from a random person. Then, I came across the 'Child XXX Email' example in Unit 4 of 'Comm Studies 030: Contemporary Problems in Freedom of Speech'. http://faculty-web.at.nwu.edu:80/commstud/freespeech/units/four/kidporn.html I believe that a likely source of those emails is this page, since an 'excite' search on 'child pornography' also refers to the above page. Someone who is not looking closely at the page, or is unfamiliar with the 'net, may mistake you as the profferer of this material. Even if this is not the reason for unsolicited email, I would strongly urge you to have your name taken off of this particular page. This will probably stop the unsolicited email. If it doesn't, please forward the messages to postmaster@webtv.net. Sincerely,[name deleted] |
